Everything you want to know about the daith piercing

A daith piercing is one of those piercings that can be subtle and striking at the same time. The piercing is located deep within the ear, in the cartilage just above the ear canal. Because of this, you don't always see it immediately from the front, but as soon as light catches the jewelry, it immediately gives your ear more character.

At All Perfectly Pierced, we receive many questions about the daith piercing. Pain and healing are often at the top, as are sleeping, earbuds, and the possible link to migraines. This is logical, as the daith is in a unique spot and is often seen as a more adventurous cartilage piercing.

In this blog, we'll gently guide you through everything you need to know before getting a daith piercing.

What is a daith piercing?

A daith piercing is placed through the sturdy cartilage on the inside of the ear. This is the piece of cartilage that sits like an arch above the ear canal. Because this spot is deeper in the ear, getting a daith piercing requires precision, experience, and a good understanding of the anatomy of the ear.

Not every ear is automatically suitable for a daith. The shape, thickness, and space of the cartilage vary per person. Sometimes the fold is nicely pronounced and easy to pierce. Sometimes the area is too small, too flat, or too difficult to reach to place the piercing beautifully and responsibly.

That's why at All Perfectly Pierced, we always first look at your anatomy. We assess whether the daith can be placed well, which jewelry is suitable, and whether the piercing can heal comfortably. A piercing should not only look good on the day it is placed but also stay in place well once healed.

This is precisely what makes the daith so special. It is technically a bit more difficult, but very stylish and a bit less standard than many other ear piercings.

Does a daith piercing hurt?

Honestly: a daith piercing is usually experienced as more painful than an average ear piercing. The piercing goes through a sturdy piece of cartilage and is in a spot that can feel sensitive. As a result, the pressure during placement is often more intense than with, for example, a lobe piercing or a simple helix.

On average, we give the daith piercing a pain score of 7 out of 10. That doesn't mean the pain lasts long. The piercing itself is quick, but the moment can be intense. Many people describe it as a deep pressure rather than a sharp pain.

Important to know: pain is personal. Some people find a daith perfectly manageable, while others find it significantly more intense. Tension, fatigue, hormones, previous piercing experience, and whether you've eaten well can all influence how you experience the moment.

At All Perfectly Pierced, we consciously take our time with this. We explain what we're doing, ensure you're comfortable, and calmly guide you through the process. No rush, no pressure, but a professional setting where you feel safe.

How long does a daith piercing take to heal?

The healing of a daith piercing takes an average of 3 to 9 months. This is normal for a cartilage piercing. Cartilage has less blood flow than, for example, an earlobe, so the body needs more time to fully recover the piercing.

What many people appreciate about the daith is that this piercing often heals more smoothly than expected. Because it sits further inside the ear, it is usually better protected from bumps, hair, clothing, and daily movements. As a result, it is less likely to be hit than, for example, a helix or flat piercing.

That doesn't mean you don't have to do anything. A daith remains a cartilage piercing and requires good aftercare. Touch the piercing as little as possible, do not twist the jewelry, and try not to pick at scabs. The more rest you give the piercing, the greater the chance of beautiful healing.

The area may be sensitive for the first few weeks. After that, it often calms down, but that doesn't mean the piercing is fully healed yet. Especially with cartilage piercings, it is important not to change jewelry too early or to think that everything is done too quickly.

Sleeping with a daith piercing

A big advantage of the daith piercing is that you often experience relatively little discomfort from it while sleeping. Because the piercing is on the inside of the ear, there is less direct pressure on it than with piercings on the outer edge of the ear.

This makes the daith surprisingly comfortable for many people during healing. Especially compared to a helix, flat, or forward helix, which can more easily rub against your pillow. Nevertheless, it is still wise to be careful during the initial period and not consciously lie on your new piercing.

Do you sleep a lot on the same side? Then a piercing pillow can help relieve pressure on your ear. This gives the piercing more rest and prevents unnecessary irritation. This is especially useful if you have multiple ear piercings or are sensitive to pressure while sleeping.

A well-placed daith with suitable initial jewelry can therefore heal quite pleasantly. But here too, the rule applies: rest is more important than being tough. Your body needs time for the piercing to recover beautifully.

Earbuds, AirPods, and in-ear headphones with a daith piercing

An important consideration with a daith piercing is the use of earbuds and in-ear devices. Because the piercing is close to the ear canal, earbuds, AirPods, or in-ear headphones can press against the jewelry. This can cause irritation, especially during healing.

Do you use earbuds daily for work, music, sleeping, traveling, or sports? Then it's good to think about this beforehand. During the healing period, we recommend causing as little pressure and friction on the piercing as possible. This means you might temporarily be unable to wear earbuds as well.

After full healing, some people can use earbuds perfectly fine again. For others, it depends on the shape of the ear, the type of earbud, and the chosen jewelry. A large or prominent piece of jewelry might interfere more quickly than a compact ring or a well-fitting clicker.

This is precisely why personal advice is important. We don't just look at what's beautiful, but also at your daily life. A daith piercing should suit your ear and how you use your ears.

Daith piercing and migraines

The daith piercing is often mentioned in relation to migraines. Some people hope that a daith piercing can alleviate migraine symptoms, as the location of the piercing is associated with an acupressure point in acupuncture theory.

It's important to be honest about this. A daith piercing for migraines is not a proven medical treatment, and there's no guarantee that symptoms will reduce. Some clients share positive experiences, but that doesn't mean it works for everyone.

At All Perfectly Pierced, we therefore advise choosing a daith piercing primarily because you like it and because it suits your ear. Do not see it as a substitute for medical advice or treatment. If you experience severe migraine symptoms, always discuss this with a doctor.

What kind of jewelry suits a daith piercing?

For a new daith piercing, we always choose jewelry that is suitable for the healing phase. Because the daith is located deep within the ear and goes through firm cartilage, it is important that the jewelry fits your anatomy well. It must provide enough space for swelling, but also not be unnecessarily large or heavy.

For a daith piercing, a ring-shaped piece of jewelry is usually chosen, such as a simple ring or a subtle clicker. This is because the piercing goes through a curved piece of cartilage. A ring often fits more naturally there than a straight piece of jewelry.

At All Perfectly Pierced, we work with safe and high-quality materials, such as implant-grade titanium and solid 14k or 18k gold. Especially for a new cartilage piercing, material choice is important. Beautiful jewelry is nice, but it must also be suitable for a calm healing process.

After healing, more options become available. Think of a refined gold clicker, a piece of jewelry with opal, subtle sparkle, or a more luxurious design that complements the rest of your ear styling. Not every piece of jewelry is suitable for every ear. Therefore, when changing jewelry, we always consider the position of the piercing, the space in your ear, and the overall look you want to create.

At All Perfectly Pierced, we not only help you with getting the piercing, but also with choosing daith jewelry that suits your ear and style.

Combining a daith piercing with other ear piercings

A daith piercing can be a beautiful central detail in ear styling. Because the piercing is on the inside of the ear, it brings depth and balance to your overall ear combination. It works well with piercings on the outside of the ear, such as a helix, flat, conch or stacked lobe.

Do you like a calm and refined style? Then a subtle gold daith ring can combine beautifully with small studs in the earlobe or a minimalist helix. If you want more of a statement? Then a daith clicker with stones or opal can form a powerful accent within a more luxurious ear styling.

What's important: a daith piercing already demands quite a bit of visual attention. Therefore, the rest of your ear doesn't always have to be large or busy. Sometimes the styling is made stronger by contrast. A striking daith with calm jewelry around it can be more elegant than sparkle everywhere at once.

During a styling appointment, we look at the overall picture. We pay attention to the shape of your ear, existing piercings, jewelry color, symmetry, and the space that is still available. This way, you prevent piercings from being chosen independently, and an ear combination that truly suits you is created.

Possible complications with a daith piercing

A daith piercing can heal beautifully and relatively calmly, but it remains a cartilage piercing. This means that irritation, pressure pain, swelling, or a fluid bump can occur if the piercing receives too much movement, pressure, or friction.

With the daith, a significant point of attention is its placement. The piercing is close to the ear canal. This means that earplugs, AirPods, in-ear headphones, or hearing protection can press against the jewelry. Especially during healing, this can cause irritation. Do you use earplugs daily for work, sleep, music, or sports? Always discuss this with your piercer beforehand.

Another point is cleaning. The daith is located a bit deeper in the ear and is therefore less visible. This doesn't mean you should clean harder. Quite the opposite. Too much cleaning, twisting, or picking can make the skin more agitated. Gentle aftercare and minimal touching remain the most important things.

Also, pay attention to signals that are not part of normal healing. These include increasing pain, throbbing swelling, pus, fever, or an ear that becomes increasingly red and warm. If in doubt, always contact your piercer. For serious complaints or if you suspect an infection, it is advisable to contact your general practitioner.

At All Perfectly Pierced, we are happy to help you, but we do not provide medical treatment ourselves. However, we can assess whether irritation might be caused by pressure, the jewelry, care, earplugs, or placement.

Infections

An infection can occur with any piercing, but cartilage piercings require extra attention because blood flow there is less strong than in the earlobe. As a result, the body can sometimes have more difficulty clearing bacteria in that area.

Possible signs of an infection include increasing redness, warmth, swelling, throbbing pain, and sometimes pus. A little sensitivity, slight swelling, or crusting is part of normal healing, but symptoms that worsen or make you feel ill should be taken seriously.

If you doubt whether your daith piercing is healing normally, contact your piercer. For clear signs of infection, fever, or increasing pain, we will always refer you to your general practitioner. Safety comes first.

Piercing fluid bump

Do you see a red or bumpy lump around your daith piercing? This could be a piercing fluid bump. With a daith, this often occurs due to pressure, friction, sleeping on the piercing, earplugs, incorrect material, or too much movement of the jewelry.

A fluid bump is usually no cause for panic, but it is a sign that the piercing is getting irritated by something. Do not squeeze, twist, or use aggressive remedies. This often only makes the skin more agitated.
