Why we moved In our previous studio, we worked from a single treatment room. Everything blended together there. The waiting area, the place where we did piercings, and the space where you could view jewelry. In practice, this meant customers moved past each other. While we were piercing, the shop was effectively at a standstill. And if someone came in for jewelry or advice, others often had to wait until there was space again. It worked, but it never felt like the experience we truly wanted to offer. We noticed that waiting times increased and it became increasingly difficult to help people in between. Often, we could only give one customer at a time the attention we value. And precisely that peace and personal approach are the reasons people consciously choose us. We simply outgrew the premises. In recent years, I've noticed something happening in the piercing world that, frankly, troubles me. Advertisements are popping up everywhere for a piercing course in the Netherlands. "Become a piercer in three days." "Start your own studio immediately." "Receive your certificate and start right away." And every time, I think the same thing: that's not how this profession works. For me, piercing has never been a quick action. It has never been something you just learn. It's something you understand slowly. By standing next to someone who has been doing it for years. By observing. By listening. By making mistakes under supervision. By gradually gaining responsibility. That's how a craft is learned, and perhaps that's precisely why this topic affects me. "Piercer" is not a protected title In the Netherlands, the title "piercer" is not legally protected. There is no nationally recognized diploma and no central exam that tests professional competence. Anyone can, in principle, offer a piercing course and issue a certificate afterwards. This means that the term "certified piercer" legally says little about experience, quality, or expertise. It only states that someone has completed a course. How long that course lasted, how much practical experience was gained, and under what supervision it happened, varies greatly per provider. In short, a certificate is not a quality mark. Nevertheless, we increasingly see "certified piercer" used as proof of expertise. As if it were official recognition. And that's where the problem lies. As soon as the piercing is done, your body begins healing . Unlike a regular wound, your body now has to deal with a permanent "foreign object": the jewelry. This makes healing more complex and takes longer . In this blog post, we explain step by step how your body handles this process, including important medical terms (with explanations) and tips for healthy healing. What does the skin around a piercing look like? When you examine a cross-section of the skin, you see different layers, each of which plays a role in the healing process. The epidermis forms the outermost protective layer. Beneath this lies the dermis, rich in blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue. This is where most healing takes place. With cartilage piercings, such as the helix or conch, the canal runs even deeper: through cartilage tissue. Because cartilage has little blood flow, healing is slower there and the risk of complications is higher. Around the jewelry, the body eventually forms an epithelial-lined tunnel, a kind of internal skin layer, that encloses and protects the canal. 4 phase of wound healing Stages of wound healing Phase 1: Direct wound closure (hemostasis) Immediately after the piercing, the body's natural clotting system kicks into action.
